Deinzer leads way for Metuchen over McCarrick "With the wind coming off the bay, it was pretty difficult to throw the ball, so we had to rely on our ground game," Metuchen head coach Bob Ulmer said. "Steve Deinzer and Elijah Sellers ran well and made all the right cuts." Deinzer, one of the county's most prolific passers this season, proved he could hurt teams even when the Bulldogs' aerial attack is grounded. Deinzer entered the game with over 1,200 passing yards but attempted just nine passes in Friday night's victory. He finished the game with 116 yards on nine carries. On one of his two pass completions, Deinzer connected with Anthony Feltre on a 49-yard touchdown toss for the game's first score. "He's feeling more confident running the ball," Ulmer said. "He did a nice job against McCarrick, and we also got a nice game out of running back Elijah Sellers." Deinzer gave the Bulldogs a 14-0 advantage at the end of the first quarter on a 60-yard touchdown run. Cardinal McCarrick had opportunities to climb back but was plagued by turnovers and poor field position. The Bulldogs capitalized on excellent field position in the second half to run away with the game. "I thought our defense played a pretty good game," Ulmer said. "We lost Anthony Terenzi to an injury, and we had some other guys step up and play well on defense. Cornerback Errol Lindo filled in and did a good job. Quinn Meng gave us another solid game at linebacker." Metuchen has been on a roll of late, and Ulmer credits a tough early-season schedule for his team's toughness. "We knew that our first four games were going to be very difficult for us," Ulmer said. "We played some powerhouse teams from the Shore Conference that gave us some physical battles. The fact that we were able to close out that stretch with a few wins showed our guys they could beat some tough opponents. I know their record doesn't say so, but a team like Dunellen was also a tough test for us. They're a very good team." The Bulldogs will get another team from the Shore Conference this week in a game against Monsignor Donovan High School out of Toms River. "They play the triple option, which is something we'll have to slow down in order to be successful," Ulmer said. "I know they beat Shore Regional and gave Rumson Fair- Haven a run for its money. We'll look to get back to our game this week and go to the air a bit more than we did against Cardinal Mc- Carrick." |
