Holocaust observance scheduled for May 4

The Henry Ricklis Holocaust Memorial Committee of Monroe Township will hold its annual Yom HaShoah Observance at 1:30 p.m. on May 4 in the Richard P. Marasco PerformingArts Center atMonroe Township High School, Perrineville Road. This year's event is titled "Generations of Survivors."

The observance, under the direction of RicklismembersNinaWolff and Ted Kartzman, will feature a Survivors Cadence and Menorah-Lighting Ceremony. In addition to remembering those who perished in the camps, the menorah lighting will pay tribute to Irena Sendler, the little-known Polish rescuer of 2,500 Jewish children from the Warsaw ghetto.

Many Monroe dignitaries and religious leaders of all faiths will take part in the program. The Monroe Township Jewish Center Choir, under the direction of Cantor Jack Kushner, will perform.

A round-table discussion, facilitated by Ricklis member David Rothman, will feature three individuals who have firsthand or secondhand experience of the Holocaust - author ShirleyWachtel, a second-generation survivor who wrote "My Mother's Shoes: The Story of Blima"; BarbaraMoorman, whose mother saved 36 Jews, including Ricklis member Ilsa Loeb, during the war; and Bill Schrimmer, whose family fled Germany in 1939, only to findmistrust and incarceration in England.

The observance will begin promptly at 1:30; however, Yahrzeit candles will be available for lighting at 1 p.m.

Seating is by general admission. All are welcome to attend.
