Bulldogs softball trying to get back on track Last week the Bulldogs struggled offensively in a 1-0 loss to Spotswood and in an 8- 0 defeat at the hands of BishopAhr.With six starters gone from last year's 10-11 team, it has taken time for many of the players to learn new roles. "We have a lot of players at newpositions this year," Metuchen head coach Krystle Petty said. "We're definitely starting to turn things around, and hopefullywe can pick up some wins this week and get some confidence." One player who has returned to a familiar position is pitching ace Caitlyn Zahn. Zahnwas the Bulldogs'ace last year and appears to be in top form again. "She looks good," Petty said. "She's gotten faster since last year and more consistent. She has a great drop-curve, and we're looking for another good year fromher. She'll definitely keep us in games, and I expect our defense to be solid behind her. The key is for us to turn things around offensively." Should Zahn need relief, junior Megan Campbell is expected to be called upon. Campbell also possesses a strong arm and, like Zahn, works well with catcher Lauren Ruegger. "Lauren calls a good game behind the plate," Petty said. "She knows our pitchers well and she was one of our top hitters from last season. She's off to a slow start, but we're hoping our bats wake up." Rebecca Grayzel and Lindsey Peragallo are two Bulldogs to have been relocated this spring. Both were outfielders last season, and Grayzel finds herself at first base with Peragallo at second. "Lindsey is doing an outstanding job and Rebecca looks great defensively," Petty said. "Rebecca is batting third in the order, and we're looking for some production out of that spot in the lineup." Hannah Thomas made the switch from third base to shortstop this season with junior KatieMeehan occupying the hot corner. "This is Katie's first year on the varsity teamand she's been a great addition," Petty said. "Hannah has taken control of the infield, and she's really developed into one of the best players in the area. She's solid offensively and defensively." The outfield is led by experienced left fielder Caroline Murphy. While Murphy returns to a familiar position, she has also had tomake some changes this season. No longer hitting from the right side, Murphy has turned into a slap hitter from the left side. "Caroline is probably the fastest girl on the team, so we wanted to utilize her speed at the plate," Petty said. "She's been working very hard on the transition." JuniorKaycieGreen sawtime in left and right last season but has earned the fulltime centerfielder position. In right field is sophomore Laura Speziale. A transfer from SouthAmboy, Spezialemoved to the outfield from the infield and has made a smooth transition. Designated hitter Katie Ford rounds out the Bulldog lineup. "Katie Ford has been an offensive leader for us so far," Petty said. "Hopefully the rest of the team will come around and we'll get some wins this week." |
