Alternatives to euthanizing exist
Iread a letter in the March 5 Sentinel from Liane Mancini. She had visited the new Woodbridge Animal Shelter. I am very happy that Woodbridge finally has an operational shelter.

The letter stated that certain breeds - chowchow, Doberman pinscher, Rottweiler, pit bull, and mixes of the above - whether picked up as strays or surrendered, are never offered for adoption. She also noted that Edison also follows this policy.

Besides breed profiling, there is the possibility of incorrectly identifying mixed breeds as being in these particular categories.

If Woodbridge and Edison fear liability from the general public, they might consider dealing with AKC breed rescue clubs who could evaluate and adopt at least some of these dogs. Other possibilities include select police canine units that deal with shelters and perhaps some longestablished shelters with outreach programs, one being St. Hubert's in Madison.
