Iselin woman pleads guilty to child endangerment
WOODBRIDGE- Beverly Bryant, who had been a state-licensed day-care provider for 12 years at her Carver Street home in Iselin, could face up to five years' probation, 364 days at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in North Brunswick, and permanently lose her day care license as a result of the death of an 11-month-old Carteret boy who died while in her care in August 2007.
The 64-year-old mother of two grown children and grandmother of five entered guilty pleas to two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, which is a third-degree offense, before state Superior Court Judge James F. Mulvihill, sitting in New Brunswick, on Feb. 25, authorities said. Bryant will be sentenced on May 28.
A 9-year-old boy, identified by the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office only as "J.L.," was charged with the death of the 11- month-old boy, Tahir Francis, on Aug. 29, 2007, authorities said.
The 9-year-old pleaded guilty to the juvenile equivalent of manslaughter before state Superior Court Judge RogerW. Daley, sitting in New Brunswick, on Feb. 14, and was sentenced to 18 months' probation along with the condition that he continues in his current counseling, authorities said.
The juvenile was originally charged with aggravated manslaughter for causing the death of the infant, authorities said.
Middlesex County Chief Medical ExaminerAndrew Falzone performed an autopsy on Aug. 24, 2007, which indicated that the cause of the infant's death was blunt force trauma to the head. The juvenile and the infant, along with three other children, were under the care of Bryant at her residence on Carver Street in Iselin onAug. 23, 2007. Bryant had cared for the 9-year-old boy since he was 2 years old and had cared for Francis for three months.
Bryant's day care center was last inspected on Aug. 7, with minor items that she quickly abated, and the center was up for registration renewal in October.
