Keiser, Zannetti pace Stevens to fifth-place finish at GMC
Wrestling team back in action today at Rahway
BY SHAWN LAYTON Staff Writer
Dan Keiser and Greg Zannetti won their respective weight classes at the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament to pace the J.P. Stevens High School wrestling team to a fifth-place finish at the annual event.

ERIC SUCAR staff J.P. Stevens' Jesse Sattler (top) keeps a hold on Old Bridge's Justin Kitchen during their 145-pound bout at the annual Greater Middlesex Conference Wrestling Tournament held at Piscataway High School on Feb. 2. Sattler went on to win the match by a score of 4-3.
Keiser occupied the top spot on the winner's podium for a second straight season after an impressive 12-7 win over Chuck Sabin of Woodbridge. Keiser (135 pounds) was equally as impressive in his 9-3 decision over Monroe's Dave Saley in the semifinals.

"In the finals, Dan changed his game plan and did a lot of his damage on his feet," Stevens head coachMike Sider said. "He spent a lot of time on his feet in the semis, too, and scored three takedowns. He can really dominate a match."

Keiser, now 27-2 on the season, also registered impressive wins over Middlesex's Eric Norgard and Perth Amboy's JimmyMartinez. Keiser defeated Norgard 17-7 and Martinez 18-3.

"Danny proved he is the best at 135 pounds," Sider said. "He was in total control in every match."

The name Zannetti is now officially synonymous with GMC Champion. Greg became the third family member to be crowned champion after brothers Gene and Jeff won the honor in years past. Gene is currently coaching at the collegiate level while Jeff is enjoying a stellar career at the University of Pennsylvania.

A finalist a year ago, Greg won this year's title at 152 pounds after a 20-7 major decision over Mike Dessino of Middlesex. Zannetti upped his record to 28-1 on the season and was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler at the upper weights.

Zannetti reached the finals after an impressive 10-3 decision over South Brunswick's Ryan Smith. Smith ousted Zannetti from the Regions last year. The two had met twice earlier this season, with Zannetti winning both bouts.

"That semifinal match really could have been a final," Sider said. "Both Greg and Ryan had a shot atwinning theweight class, but Greg wrestled to prove a point."

Zannetti let the momentum from his bout with Smith carry him to a dominant performance in the finals.

"Greg put Dessino on his back early," Sider said. "From there he just put on an outstanding performance."

Stevens' Brad Newman took third in the tournament as the No. 6 seed. Newman started the tournament with two straight pins before losing a close 6-0 decision in the semifinals to South Plainfield's Dan Pompilio. Newman beat opponents Sammy Morales of Perth Amboy and Mike Moore of Woodbridge in wrestle-backs to take third.

No. 5 seed Jesse Sattler took fourth place at 145 pounds. Sattler registered wins over Brett Griffin of South Brunswick, Justin Kitchen of Old Bridge, and South Plainfield's Nick Ballone.

Stevens' Greg Gerold (160), Chris Di- Palo (112) and Marc Ruggiero (215) were all top 10 finishers at the event.

The Hawks are back in action with a road match today at Rahway before closing the week when Woodbridge comes to town for a 7 p.m. bout Feb. 8.
