Fake water co. man distracts woman while she is robbed
BY KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

WOODBRIDGE - Police are looking for a 5-foot-5-inch-tall white male with a thin build who posed as a water company employee in an incident that led to a theft from a 78-year-old woman at her Remsen Avenue residence in Avenel last week.

The incident occurred Jan. 29 between 11:45 a.m. and 12:39 p.m., police said.

The suspect was described as having short brown hair brushed back and a clean-shaven face, and wearing a white dress shirt, navy blue tie, navy blue sport jacket and blue pants, according to the police report.

The suspect rang the victim's doorbell several times and banged on the door before the victim answered her door.

The victim told police that the suspect smiled often and was very polite. The suspect was also wearing an identification tag that read "Water Company" and had a small photograph of the suspect on it, police said.

The suspect asked the victim if he could see the water pressure at the kitchen sink, and when he received consent from the victim, he checked the water at the faucet several times by turning the water on and off, police said.

Then the suspect requested the victim to go to the bathroom sink and turn the water on and off. She complied with the suspect's request, and they were both in the bathroom checking the sink pressure, police said.

During that time, the suspect walked back into the kitchen and the victim remained in the bathroom, police said.

After a few minutes, the victim also went back into the kitchen. The suspect was talking on a cell phone when he told the victim, "He's after me, my boss is after me. I have to leave now. I will be back in 10 minutes," police said.

The victim told police that after about three minutes, she stepped from the kitchen into the hallway and saw the back of another person exiting her front door, the police report said.

The victim could only describe the second suspect as wearing a light brown jacket and a light brown baseball cap.

The victim told police that a blue and green safe deposit metal box containing a passport, a marriage license, a birth certificate, a truck title, two motorcycle titles, possibly a savings bond and an old expired auto registration was stolen, police said.
