Youths arrested for firing handgun in Avenel

WOODBRIDGE - Police arrested four black males, including two juveniles, for allegedly firing a handgun at the LaMirageMotor Inn on Route 1 south inAvenel last week, police said.

Police arrested and charged Shawn Lee Bethea, 18, Piscataway, Barry Eugene Deloath, 19, a 17-yearold New Brunswick male, and a 16- year-old New Brunswick male for unlawful possession of a weapon and for possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, police said.

Police were dispatched to the inn nine minutes into the new year - 12:09 a.m. on Jan. 1- on a report of four or five blackmales firing a handgun at the La Mirage, and the suspects were observed getting into a blue Honda and fleeing the scene onto Route 1 south, police said.

Police stopped the suspects' vehicle in the parking lot of the ShopRite on Route 35 south and observed the driver-side rear passenger lean forward toward the passenger side of the vehicle and appeared to be attempting to hide something under the front passenger seat, the police report said.

Once police got all four suspects out of the vehicle, they observed two live 9 mm rounds of ammunition on the floor of the vehicle in the front of the rear passenger-side seat and a black and silver handgun - 9 mm Ruger - under the front passenger seat, police said.

Police Officer Michael Tapia unloaded the handgun, which contained two live rounds, police said.

Tapia then smelled the barrel of the handgun and knew through his training and experience that the weapon smelled as though it had just been fired, the police report said.

Police also found a half-full box of latex gloves, several pairs of small black gloves, a black ski mask, and an empty bottle of Bacardi Razz rum, the police report said.

Police found three empty 9 mm cartridges in the parking lot of the La Mirage where Bethea stated they would be, the police report said.

Bethea and Deloath were also issued complaints for discharging a firearm and having an open alcohol container inside the passenger compartment of the vehicle, the police report said.

Bethea and Deloath's bail was set at $2,500 each, with no 10 percent option, the police report said.
