Pursuit of stolen car leads to arrests
Chase ends in crash; suspects apprehended on foot
BY KATHY CHANG Staff Writer
Four males, including two juveniles, in a stolen 2003 Cadillac Deville led police on a chase ending in Elizabeth last week, according to a Woodbridge Township police report.

The incident occurred at 4:55 p.m. as police Sgt. Christian Laudadio observed the Cadillac make an illegal left turn out of the Ruby Tuesday parking lot onto Gill Lane in Iselin on Nov. 17, police said.

Police arrested and charged Laquan R. Smith, 20, of Newark, and Clinton Kimbrough, 18, of Newark, with receiving stolen property, hindering apprehension, and eluding police.

The two juveniles - a 17-yearold Newark male and a 15-yearold Irvington male - were processed and released.

After Laudadio activated his emergency lights, he observed the 17-year-old driver continue driving through the traffic light onto Route 1 north, police said.

"The Cadillac immediately took off at a high rate of speed north on Route 1," the police report stated.

Police observed the Cadillac go through the red light on Green Street and continue northbound on Route 1 into Rahway, according to the report.

"The suspect vehicle made many dangerous maneuvers from lane to lane, even driving up on the concrete median," the police report said.

The chase continued, with the Cadillac going through red lights along the way on Route 1, according to police. The pursuit finally ended at the corner of Route 1 north and Myrtle Avenue in Elizabeth, when the vehicle crashed into the curb and another vehicle, the police report stated, and the four suspects quickly got out of the car and ran onto property on Myrtle Avenue.

A K-9 unit from the Union County Sheriff 's Office was on the scene as well as police officers from Linden and Elizabeth, police said.

The K-9 unit picked up the scent of the four suspects from the stolen vehicle and led Linden and Elizabeth police to three of the suspects, who had been underneath the stairs in a small crawl space of an Allen Street property. The fourth suspect was located hiding in the detached garage of a Myrtle Avenue residence, the police report said.

The Cadillac was reported stolen out of Irvington, the police report said.

Smith and Kimbrough were both transported to the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in North Brunswick and were being held on $75,000 bail.
