Local WWII vet's story is focus of library event The Woodbridge Main Library, George Frederick Plaza, will present "Remembering Halyard," a program and reception for Woodbridge veteran Anthony Orsini, 2-4 p.m. Nov. 10. In 1944, the OSS (U.S. Office of Strategic Services) launched a daring rescue, Operation Halyard, to recover more than 500 downed U.S. airmen trapped behind Nazi lines in Yugoslavia. Orsini, of Woodbridge, was one of those rescued airmen. Classified for over half a century, the story is now being told for the first time in a new book by Gregory Freeman, "The Forgotten 500." Orsini will discuss his experiences in a taped interview, and there will be excerpts read from the book. Mayor John McCormick and the Woodbridge Township Council will recognize Orsini with a proclamation. Copies of "The Forgotten 500" will be available for purchase for $18 and can be autographed by Orsini. |
