Remember the true veterans this Nov. 11
Did you ever hear or read about an interview from a baseball manager talking about his team's chances just before an important play-off or World Series game?

He'll say something like this, "I have great veterans on this team, they're real warriors, I'll go to war with them anytime."

That statement is ridiculous and just plain stupid. Allow me to explain about veterans going to war.

Baseball players play a "game." It's as simple as that. They get paid $10 million, $15 million, $20 million a year, some even more. The veterans I know get paid much less. They are underpaid. They and their families barely get by, and many don't.

The true veterans of this country wear the uniforms of our armed forces, Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine and Coast Guard as well as our Reserves and Guardsmen. These are the men and women who go to war; they are the true heroes of our country, not million-dollar athletes.

On Nov. 11, Veterans Day, we celebrate their service to our country and to our life of freedom. Freedom is not free, just look at our cemeteries this Nov. 11.

On this Veterans Day, let's honor all out vets who once wore the uniform. It may be off their backs now, but in reality, they're veterans forever serving.

And let's celebrate the election of George J. Lisicki of the borough of Carteret. He recently was elected the national commander in-chief of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States.

The borough of Carteret, Middlesex County and indeed the entire state of New Jersey should be proud of his achievement. It's a tremendous honor to lead the 2.3 million members of the greatest combat veterans organization in the world.

So, God bless our troops, both past and present, and God bless America.
