Morning blaze leaves firefighter injured Blaze at Dana Transportation contained in two hours
WOODBRIDGE - An early morning fire at the Dana Transportation Co. on East Essex Avenue in Port Reading left one firefighter injured on Monday.
Firefighters were dispatched to an initial report of a tire fire at 5:23 a.m., fire officials said.
Between 70 and 75 fire personnel responded to the scene from the township as well as Carteret and Perth Amboy, fire officials said.
"When firefighters arrived, there was a large quantity of tires," said Firefighter Paul DeLeo of the Port Reading Fire Department. "The fire was on the outside mostly, but carried inside a storage facility, which was used as a maintenance facility for tractor-trailers."
DeLeo said the tactic was to prevent potential exposures from catching fire, which included a tanker truck that was approximately 20 to 30 feet away from the fire.
DeLeo added that the collaborative effort by fire personnel and the large amount of water used kept the fire from escalating.
"By 7:16 a.m., the fire was under control, and by 10:30 a.m. the scene was cleared," said DeLeo.
A firefighter, whose name was not released, suffered minor injuries in a slip-and-fall accident during the fire. He was transported to JFK Medical Center in Edison, where he was treated and released, fire officials said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Fire Prevention Bureau.
