Father & Son juniors rebound from first loss
EDISON - After suffering its first loss of the summer, the Father & Son Junior Legion team rebounded with consecutive wins to head into the final week of the regular season 14-1.
Father & Son opened last week with a lackluster performance, and the result was a 7-6 Sayreville win. Chris Virag gave his team all they could ask for with a complete game but was touched up for four unearned runs to take the loss.
"Our defense didn't help Chris out as we struggled from the get-go," Father & Son head coach Tom D'Agostino said. "We didn't deserve to win, although we had a shot late in the game. Our errors proved too much to overcome."
The team followed its lone loss with a 12-2 win over Edison. Freshman pitcher Brian Duran led the way with five innings of work. Duran scattered four hits and struck out two. Reliever Tony Olarra entered the game to pitch the sixth and final inning of the mercy-rule-shortened game.
First baseman David Goodman belted his first home run of the season and finished the contest with four RBIs. Olarra enjoyed a solid game at the plate as well, going 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Right fielder Anthony Caiola went 3-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs in the victory.
"Anytime you follow up a loss with a win is a good sign, but I was not particularly thrilled with the way we played," D'Agostino said. "We didn't play sharp baseball last week and we have to get back on track."
A 14-1 win over Colonia Gold wrapped up the week for Father & Son. Andrew Rivera led off the game with a home run, his third lead-off homer of the summer, and shortstop Matt Rohal went 4-for-5 with triples and a double. Rohal finished with three RBIs while teammate Kyle Paganelli went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
"We've been in a funk ever since the Sayreville game, and the Colonia game was no exception," D'Agostino said. "It's always great to get a win, but it wasn't one of our better games."
Bryan Hartman notched his second win of the summer for Father & Son, with teammate Brian Pollex recording the final three outs in the fifth inning.
"I'm happy we rebounded from the loss but I'm also happy we got the loss out of the way," D'Agostino said. "Hopefully we can catch fire and get hot at the right time as we head into this week against some tough competition. If we do what we are supposed to do, we should seal up a county title."
After early week match-ups with Milltown and JFK, Father & Son will wrap up the regular season with a home game today against visiting Bishop Ahr White before hitting the road for a July 19 date with South Brunswick Gold.
"We'll take things one game at a time and hopefully get rolling again," D'Agostino said. "It's all about getting hot at the right time."
