Father & Son juniors are the team to beat
BY SHAWN LAYTON
Staff Writer

EDISON - The Father & Son Junior Legion team remained unbeaten with lopsided wins over East Brunswick, Woodbridge Red and South Plainfield last week.

The team has now rolled off 14 straight victories to open the summer season. Last year's team won its first 17 before suffering its first loss.

Hurler Nick Marics tossed a six-inning gem to record his second win of the summer in the team's 8-1 victory over East Brunswick. Marics allowed just two hits and an unearned run while striking out 10.

"Nick has impressed all of us this summer," said Father & Son head coach Tom D'Agostino. "He struggled a bit in his last outing against St. Joe's, but he was able to get his curve over for strikes against East Brunswick and was pretty dominant. His progression is a good sign for us as he adds depth to the staff."

Center fielder Andrew Rivera led the game off with a solo homer in the first inning and finished the game 2-for-4 with a three-run double in the sixth to give him four RBIs in the contest. First baseman Andrew Sporer also went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

The team got plenty of offense in its 19-3 victory over Woodbridge Red. Rivera did his usual damage with a 3-for-4 performance and four runs. Stephen Nappe and Dan Shymanski belted back-to-back homers in the first inning to set the pace for Father & Son. Shymanski finished the game 2-for-2 with another dinger and six RBIs.

"Everybody got involved offensively," D'Agostino said. "We also got good pitching to keep Woodbridge from climbing back into the game."

Marics hit a three-run blast in the third inning while left fielder Steve Migliore and shortstop Bryan Duran finished with a pair of hits each.

Against South Plainfield, it was more of the same with Matt Landrum pitching a gem and the Father & Son offense wearing itself out running the bases. The team notched its 14th straight with an 11-1 victory.

Landrum scattered three hits over five innings with two strikeouts and a walk to earn his second win of the summer.

Shymanski and Matt Rohal went back to back. For Shymanski, it was his team-leading sixth long ball of the summer. Rohal's solo shot was his second homer of the season.

Right fielder Anthony Caiola went 1-for-2 with a three-run triple in the fourth to help put the game out of reach.

With virtually the same lineup as last year's team, the Father & Son team has now won 32 of its last 36 games, stretching back to last summer. The team will look to stay on the winning side with a road game against Colonia Gold today at 5:45 p.m.

The team was scheduled to face Sayreville and Edison boys earlier in the week. Heading into this week, Sayreville was in third place and looking to make a push for the top two spots.

"That will be a tough game," D'Agostino said prior to Monday's game. "They will come looking to knock us off, so we better be ready."
