Fords VFW installs 2007-08 officers

The Fords Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 6090 and its Ladies Auxiliary held a joint installation of their 2007-08 officers May 17 at the post home, New Brunswick Avenue, Fords section of Woodbridge. Post officers for 2007-08 are: Stephen Fodor, commander; Mike Daly, senior vice commander; Bob Dube, junior vice commander; George Jogan, quartermaster; Scott Cleary, chaplain; Al Fisher, judge advocate; Tom Dyson, surgeon; Richard Buda, three-year trustee; George Crawford, two-year trustee; and Tom Redhing, one-year trustee.

Ladies Auxiliary officers for 2007-08 are: Angela Valerioti, president; Fran Malara, senior vice president and conductress; Sandra Fodor, junior vice president; Helen Amazi, treasurer; Jennifer Payer, chaplain; Linda Kuchie, secretary; and Karen Villanova, guard.

Friends of Edison library slate June 9 book sale

The Friends of the Edison Public Library will sponsor its Summer Beach Reading book sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 9 at the main library, 340 Plainfield Ave., Edison. All are invited to browse through hundreds of gently used fiction and nonfiction books, most of which are paperbacks. Books are generally priced from 50 cents to $1.50. Proceeds from the sale will go to Friends of the Edison Public Library, whose mission is to promote public support and use of the libraries; provide financial assistance to enhance collections, materials and equipment; sponsor library programs; and hold special programs and events that further the group's goals. Volunteers are needed, as are donations of books that are in good condition.

Church thrift store has clothing, Saturday hours

The Wesley Thrift Store is an outreach service of the Wesley United Methodist Church, 5053 Woodbridge Ave., Edison (732-738-0232). In the next few weeks the shelves will be stocked with spring clothing of all kinds and accessories to match. Also, the store has resumed Saturday hours, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Thanks to all the volunteers who do faithfully serve each week during the year. A special thanks to Carol Beck and Anne Sener, our coordinators, without them this endeavor would not be possible!

Law panel to offer wills, estate planning seminar

The New Jersey State Bar Foundation will present a free public seminar on wills and estate planning from 7-9 p.m. on June 5 at the New Jersey Law Center, One Constitution Square (off Ryders Lane), New Brunswick.

Topics will include wills and trusts, gift and tax planning, New Jersey probate procedures, power of attorney, living wills, federal estate tax and New Jersey inheritance tax.

A question-and-answer period will follow the presentations.

The seminar is open to the public. Advance registration is required.

Elks hold flea market Tuesdays and Saturdays

The Woodbridge Elks Lodge No. 2116 holds a flea market with over 60 vendors every Tuesday and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. (weather permitting) at the Woodbridge Elks Lodge, 665 Rahway Ave., Woodbridge, (across the street from the Trinity Church).

Woodbridge AARP announces meetings, trips

The Woodbridge AARP Chapter 3869 has scheduled the following:

A trip for High Tea at the First Elected Governor's Mansion situated on 13 acres in Union will held on May 30. There will be a tour of the mansion and a short film shown.

The Chapter will sponsor an 11-day trip to San Antonio, Texas from Sept. 7-17. The trip includes 18 meals, a tour of San Antonio, a cruise of famous River Walk district, the Alamo, the LBJ Ranch and San Antonio Missions. Cost is $879 per person. A $200 deposit is required at time of signup.

AARP sponsoring trip

to see 'Chicago', racetrack

The Colonia Chapter of AARP is sponsoring a trip to see "Chicago" at the Candlelight Dinner Theater in Delaware on May 24 and 25. The price is $164 for the two-day trip. Overnight stay will be at the Best Western in Newark, Delaware.

Boating classes offered at American Legion hall

The American Legion Hall, 314 Berry St., Woodbridge, will host one-day N.J. Boating Safety classes on June 10, July 22, Aug. 19 and Sept. 23. For more information, call Janet at (201) 291-5976 or e-mail her at NJBoatSafe@aol.com The classes will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Course content is approved by the state of New Jersey and the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA). The course is recognized by the U.S. Coast Guard as acceptable for the National Recreational Boating Safety program.

Local church slates

flea market June 16

First Congregational Church, 539 Barron Ave., Woodbridge, will hold a flea market from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 16, featuring deli, baked goods and more. Vendors are needed. Both indoor and outdoor tables are available (weather permitting). Cost of medium (6-foot) table is $15. Cost of large (8-foot) table is $20. Senior citizens club slates June meetings and events

The Woodbridge Senior Citizens Club will hold its June business meetings on June 7 and 21. A trip is also planned for June 12 to the Showboat Casino in Atlantic City, and a buffet luncheon - featuring bingo - is scheduled for June 14 in St. James hall. The group will not meet during July and August. Meetings will reconvene at 1 p.m. Sept. 6 in McCorristin Hall at St. James Church, 145 Grove St., Woodbridge. New members are welcome, with membership open to those ages 60 and older who do not belong to any other township club.
