Cops led on high-speed car chase
Police: Man ran stops signs, taking cops on labyrinthine chase
BY KATHY CHANG
Staff Writer

WOODBRIDGE - A 38-year-old Elizabeth man led township police officers on a wild car chase last week, which involved four neighboring police departments, police said.

The car chase started when police observed a blue-green 2005 four-door Infiniti G35 driven by Johnny A. Marmolejos run a stop sign from Rodgers Street onto South Inman Avenue at 9:43 p.m. on Jan. 22, police said.

Then police observed Marmolejos run a second stop sign onto Route 1 and 9 north. At this time, police activated their overhead lights initiating a motor vehicle stop, police said.

As Marmolejos began to pull over into the construction site by Sansone Auto Mall on Route 1, he quickly pulled back onto the highway at an accelerating speed, police said.

Traffic was stopped ahead, which caused Marmolejos to press on his brakes and strike a vehicle in the left lane of the highway, police said.

That did not stop Marmolejos; he reversed into the police car and swung into the next lane, accelerating away, police said.

Police said no one appeared to be injured in the vehicle that Marmolejos hit and there was no visible damage on their car.

Police pursued Marmolejos as he made a left across the highway onto East Milton Avenue; down East Milton Avenue; a right on Essex Street; a right onto East Grand Avenue; a left back onto Route 1 and 9 north; a left turn onto South Wood Avenue; a right onto East Elizabeth Avenue; a right onto South Elmora Avenue; across Route 1 and 9; south on Bayway Avenue; and a right turn onto New Brunswick Avenue in Linden, the police report said.

Marmolejos then made a quick right movement, turned left and struck the front of the police vehicle. Police lost control of their vehicle and struck a fence, police said.

The suspect raced away and got onto the New Jersey Turnpike north and entered the cars-only lane. As the suspect's vehicle gained distance on the police cruiser, police terminated the pursuit near Exit 14 on the turnpike, the police report said.

When police returned to headquarters, they contacted Edison Police, who contacted the manager at Ray Catena. Police learned that the suspect's vehicle was a loaner car and were able to identify Marmolejos from DMV records.

Elizabeth Police located Marmolejos and placed him under arrest, police said.

Police issued four motor vehicle tickets and signed four complaints against Marmolejos.

The complaints include eluding police in Woodbridge, aggravated assault upon police officers in Rahway, and two aggravated assaults upon police officers in Linden. The motor vehicle tickets include two failure to stop tickets, a failure to signal turn ticket, and a reckless driving ticket, the police report said.
