Sports Shorts The Metuchen Little League announces two final registration dates for the 2007 baseball and softball season. Registrations will be held on Thursday, Jan. 18, from 7-9 p.m., and on Saturday, Jan. 20, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the Little League Clubhouse at Fater Field on Oakland Avenue. All players ages 5-15 are welcome to participate. Fees for participation are $60 for one child, $100 for two children and $125 for three or more children. A work bond of $125 and fundraising responsibilities are also required of each family. A late fee of $25 is assessed on all registrations from returning players received after Dec. 9, 2006. New players are exempt from the late fee. Application forms for returning players will be preprinted and available at registration. Applications for new families may be obtained online at www.eteamz.com/metuchenLL. However, all registrations must be completed in-person at the clubhouse. Youngsters with special needs are encouraged to register for the Buddy Ball program. There is no fee to register for Buddy Ball and participation is open to all children with disabilities ages 5-18. Players living outside of Metuchen are welcome.
Baseball Players are wanted for the Central Jersey Slammers. Players ages 9 to 14 are eligible. Tryouts will be held at The Zone on Jan. 26-27 at 6 p.m. Email slamguy1@aol.com for more information
The Alumni Softball League is now accepting registration for its spring Old Bridge Tuesday and Thursday night fastpitch league. The league is also looking for umpires for their Manalapan spring Sunday slow-modified pitch league. The league is willing to train. If interested in entering a team or becoming an umpire, contact Stuart at (732) 513-4836 The Metuchen Grapplers Wrestling Club hosted their first seventh and eighth grade team match of the season on Tuesday, Jan. 9, against East Brunswick. Grapplers Lucas D'Alfonsi (100), Colin Weidmaier (105) and Mickey Ladines (131) all earned first period pins, while Kevin Sullivan (95) produced an 8-2 decision. On Sunday, Jan. 14 the Grapplers entered 17 wrestlers in the Steven Fulcher Memorial Tournament held at Edison High School. Matt Volpe (64), Kevin Coleman (66), Kyle Fiske (128) and Dorian Miller (210) all took top honors in their divisions. Nick Revano (83) and D'Alfonsi both placed second, with Ladines and Jake Freed earning bronze medals. First-year Grapplers Devin Miller and Randy Bonet placed fourth.
