Health Dept. helps single father during holidays

WOODBRIDGE - A township man, who is a single father with six children, received a blessing over the holidays with the help of the Woodbridge Health Department.

"His children range from 10 to 17 years old," said Kimberly Jenkins, who has been working as a senior clerk typist at the department for two years. "You really don't realize how lucky you are until you meet someone who doesn't necessarily have what you have."

Jenkins came up with the idea of food baskets.

"Mayor [John E.] McCormac came to our offices to introduce himself to us about a month ago and asked what we as a community could do to better the community around the holiday," she said.

Jenkins along with Mary Anne Severino, Joanne Dalu, Peter Barcellona, Judy Sidote, Dee France, Mary Cerullo, Fern Coleman and Dawn Davis were able to put together two full laundry baskets of spaghetti, cooking oil, sauce, cake and cereal as well as a $25 gift certificate to ShopRite.

"The idea was to put together a whole dinner," said Jenkins.

The department also was able to fill a full bag of toys for the kids with the help from Toys for Tots.

Members of the department delivered the food and the toys to the family on Dec. 20.

"It was so nice to do something for the family," said Jenkins. "The look on their faces were priceless."

Jenkins expects the department to help a family every year.

"I want this to continue every year," she said. "This has been the first time that I did something good to help someone. It's definitely not all about receiving, but it's also about giving."
