Cops: Armed robbery attempt thwarted outside 7-Eleven Suspicious behavior, clothing tipped off police officer BY KATHY CHANG Staff Writer
WOODBRIDGE - Police foiled an attempted armed robbery to a 7-Eleven in Avenel last week.
Police arrested and charged Jonathan Dubrowski, 26, of Milford for criminal attempt of armed robbery and the unlawful possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose at 11:54 p.m. on Nov. 13 at the intersection of Route 1 south and Leesville Avenue, police said.
A police officer was on patrol when he observed Dubrowski standing across from the 7-Eleven on Leesville Avenue, according to the police report.
The officer said he thought it was suspicious since it was 11:54 at night and raining. When Dubrowski saw the police officer, he took out a cell phone and began talking on it.
The police officer pulled up to Dubrowski and observed that he was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt with the hood up over his head and wearing large framed eye protection [not prescription] glasses, the police report said.
When the officer started to approach Dubrowski, he observed that the male was no longer wearing the glasses, the police report said. The officer asked Dubrowski if everything was OK. The officer also observed that Dubrowski was wearing latex gloves.
Because of the time of night and what Dubrowski had on, the officer felt that he had or was about to commit some type of crime at the convenience store, the police report said.
The officer had Dubrowski sit on the ground and called for back up. While waiting, the officer found the glasses that were about a yard to the right of Dubrowski, police said.
The man began telling the officer that he was visiting friends and that he lived in New Brunswick. When the officer asked him how he got there, Dubrowski said he drove. Dubrowski said he parked his car on the street and pointed to Douglas Avenue, the police report said.
Police found a folding knife in the man's pants pocket, the police report said.
Dubrowski told police his name and that he left everything [wallet, identification, and money] in his car, police said. Police found Dubrowski's car was parked facing away from the 7-Eleven with its engine running, doors unlocked, and the key in the ignition, four houses down Douglas Avenue, the police report said.
Dubrowski told police that he was just riding around to clear his head and he was wearing the latex gloves because he was painting earlier and did not want to get paint on his hands.
Then police talked to the 7-Eleven clerks, who told police that Dubrowski was in the store earlier, but he didn't buy anything, police said.
When police went back to talk to Dubrowski, they observed that he was wearing a wig, police said.
Dubrowski was transported to headquarters and was held on $25,000 bail with no 10 percent option, the police report said.
