Association's unheeded offer still a problem

It was great to read that the Edison Jets [football team] are having their field repaired after so many years of neglect by Edison Township officials, but I can't help notice that there is a pattern to these taxpayer-funded grants to improve our parks.

Both the county and the local elected officials love to dive into this fund right around election time, while parents awaiting an election year hold their breaths as their kids play in dangerous parks.

It also concerns me why a football field that was put in last year during the Spadoro election along with some court improvements that were made would cost $500,000. Last spring, the nonprofit Edison Sportsman's Association offered to assist the township in building a gazebo, creating flower gardens and making landscaping improvements free of charge and without any strings attached. Yet [to date] the association has heard nothing from the mayor or the Township Council, which leads one to believe that it's more about political gain than caring for our kids.

Simply put, township officials feel free to use our tax money for the illusion of public good only when it suits their fancy. Even with Spadoro out of office last year, the problems still exist - and I expect them to continue.
