Man struck and killed by train

WOODBRIDGE - A NJ Transit Northeast Corridor train traveling westbound hit and killed an unidentified man northeast of the Metropark train station in Iselin Monday morning.

The incident happened at 8:10 a.m. on Oct. 23, said Dan Stessel, a NJ Transit spokesman.

"The train was not carrying any passengers at the time and was enroute to Jersey Avenue to start its passenger service," said Stessel. "The man was trespassing because there are no crossing level points along the Northeast Corridor. It's illegal and very unsafe to cross."

The man's next of kin had still not been identified as of 4 p.m. on Oct. 23, Stessel said.

The incident caused 45-minute to one-hour delays westbound from Metropark to Trenton, said Stessel.

There were 15- to 20-minute delays eastbound, he said.

"The trains were running back to normal by 9:45 a.m.," said Stessel.

The NJ Transit police and local authority responded to the scene, he said.
