PoetsWednesday slates September readings

PoetsWednesday will welcome welcome Wanda Praisner at 8 p.m. Sept. 13. Praisner has also received many awards, including two fellowships from the N.J. State Council of the Arts, Trenton, and four from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, Morristown. Her work has appeared in numerous anthologies. Both readings will be followed by open reading along with refreshments.

PoetsWednesday, co-directed by Edie Eustice and Deborah La Veglia, schedules readings at 8 p.m. the second Wednesday of every month at the Barron Arts Center, with support from the Woodbridge Township Cultural Arts Commission and contributions from the audience. Animal Rescue Force is seeking volunteers

Animal Rescue Force, East Brunswick, is seeking volunteers to work one Saturday or Sunday per month at the group's adoption centers located at the Route 18 Flea Market, East Brunswick, and at the Englishtown Auction.

Responsibilities will include walking dogs, cleaning crates and talking to the public.

American Legion presented check to Rehab Center

American Legion T. Nulty Post No. 471 presented a check for $2,500 to the Menlo Park Veterans Rehabilitation Center, Edison. This was the second installment of a donation for $5,000. The money is to be used toward the purchase of new motorized wheelchairs for veterans of Post 471 who reside at the center. The check was presented to Joseph Brandspiegel, chief executive officer at the veterans center, by Ron Davie, commander of Post 471; Edward Gorman, service officer; Don Harrity, finance officer; John Canova, first vice commander and Elbur "Bud" Richards, post historian.

Post 471 also donated $1,000 to the American Legion National Emergency Fund, to be used in helping legionnaires and their families in the areas devastated by Hurricane Katrina and other national disasters around the country.

The Post also sent phone cards valuing $500 to the troops stationed in Iraq.

The second annual Blue Star Awards program is being planned for May. Anyone who has a family member or friend from the Woodbridge area in the armed services is invited to call the post at (732) 634-9119 so the Legion can include the service members in the list to be honored.

Atlantic City trips planned at seniors club

The Fords-Keasbey Seniors Club is offering a summer trip to Caesars Casino in Atlantic City on Aug. 16. For more information, contact Helen N. at (732) 738-4907 or Helen B. at (732) 738-7655.

Excluding the summer months, the seniors club holds meetings at 2 p.m. every Friday in the cafeteria at Our Lady of Peace Church, 26 Maple Ave./Amboy Avenue, Fords section of Woodbridge. Meetings will resume in September on the first Friday after Labor Day.

Membership is open year-round to those ages 60 and older who live in Woodbridge and do not belong to any other township senior club.

Applicants must arrive at the meeting by 1:30 p.m.

The Fords librarian is present on the first Friday of each month, when blood pressure is also taken.

Avenel VFW slates trip to Shea Stadium Aug. 19

The Avenel Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Memorial Post No. 7164, 60 W. Park Ave., Avenel section of Woodbridge, is sponsoring a bus trip to Shea Stadium in Flushing, Queens, N.Y., on Aug. 19. The New York Mets will be playing the Colorado Rockies. The game will begin at 7:10 p.m., with pregame festivities celebrating the 1986 World Series Champions and featuring all former players from the winning team. The bus will leave the post home at 4 p.m. Cost is $43, which covers the cost of the ticket and transportation only. American Legion post slates Aug. blood drive

American Legion T. Nulty Post No. 471 is sponsoring a blood drive from 2:30 to 8 p.m. Aug. 30 at the post home, 25 Brown Ave., Iselin section of Woodbridge. Appointments may be made by calling the post lounge at (732) 636-9524 or the office at (732) 634-9119. Walk-ins are also welcome.

Elks flea market held every Tues. and Sat.

Woodbridge Elks Lodge 2116 holds a flea market at the Elks Hall, 665 Rahway Ave., from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Tuesday and Saturday (weather permitting), featuring more than 60 vendors. The hall is located across from Trinity Church.

Woodbridge AARP lines up 11-day trip for the fall

Woodbridge AARP Chapter No. 3869 has scheduled an 11-day trip Sept. 22-Oct. 2 to Mount Rushmore in South Dakota (includes visits to Black Hills, Crazy Horse Memorial and other sights). Cost is $835. For more information, call Mary Alice at (732) 855-1514.
