Colonia Seniors lines up events for rest of the year
The Colonia Senior Citizens Club, Colonia section of Woodbridge, has planned the following events for the remainder of the year: • Oct. 17 — A trip to Atlantic City is scheduled, with monthly trips to Atlantic City also planned for every third Tuesday. Call Connie at (732) 388-3104. • Nov. 28-29 — The club will begin celebrating Christmas at the Tropicana in Atlantic City. • Dec. 14 — The Christmas celebration continues at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City, which includes lunch, a guided tour and a visit to Rockefeller Center to see the Christmas tree and St. Patrick’s Cathedral. • Dec. 20 — A Christmas dinner dance will be held at Gran Centurions in Clark, starting at noon. Angel PAWS annual A.C. trip to be on Oct. 8
Angel Pets Animal Welfare Society Inc. will hold its annual fall casino fund-raiser on Saturday, Oct. 8. The $25 per person donation will include snacks and refreshments on the bus to and from the Showboat Casino in Atlantic City, and a coin return from the casino. The bus will depart Iselin’s St. Cecilia’s Church parking lot at 11 a.m. and will return at approximately 9 p.m. Reservations are strongly recommended. Call (732) 340-1199 for details.

The Jewish Family and Vocational Service (JFVS) of Middlesex County — with the support of a Sept. 11 recovery grant from the American Red Cross Liberty Disaster Relief Fund — is offering additional services to those individuals and families directly affected by 9/11. Services include counseling, support groups, educational groups and family activities, as well as vocational counseling and job placement services. In partnership with United Way of Central New Jersey, JFVS will also be assessing people’s eligibility for financial assistance. Dr. David S. Wendel, a local chiropractor from Woodbridge, has implemented a plan to assist victims of Hurricane Katrina. Called “Emergency H3 [H cubed],” Wendel’s emergency-relief program stands for Helping Hands (with three cans) for Hurricane relief. Wendel is inviting everyone to bring three cans of food to his office, where collection boxes are provided. The food will be distributed to hurricane victims through the American Red Cross. Wendel’s goal is to collect at least 3 tons of food. Located at 676 Amboy Ave., Woodbridge, the office is open Monday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and again from 3-7 p.m.; Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3-6:30 p.m.; and Wednesday from 4-6:30 p.m. For more information, call Wendel at (732) 750-0505. Woodbridge Center to hold vaccination clinics Woodbridge Center is partnering with Clinical Health Systems (CHS) to offer vaccinations for $25 per flu shot and $35 per pneumonia shot. Vaccination workshops will be available from 4-8 p.m. Sept. 30, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 1 and noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 2. Shots will be administered by CHS’ qualified and registered nurses at Woodbridge Center on the lower level in the Sears wing, behind the carousel. Coast Guard offering free boat inspections The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Flotilla 44, Sewaren section of Woodbridge, is hosting free boat inspections, with no penalties issued. Woodbridge Board of Ed. to hold legislative forum Judy Leidner, vice president of the Woodbridge Township Board of Education, will host a legislative forum beginning at 9 a.m. Oct. 1 at the Avenel Middle School, Woodbine Avenue, Avenel section of Woodbridge. Scheduled to attend are Congressman Mike Ferguson (R-7th Congressional District), Sen. Joseph Vitale (D-Middlesex), and Assemblymen John Wisniewski (also D-Middlesex), Joseph Cryan (D-Union) and Craig Stanley (D-Essex). Each legislator will share his own perspective regarding general education issues facing the Woodbridge school community as well as communities across the state. The floor will be open to the public. Fords-Keasbey Seniors Club lines up events The Fords-Keasbey Seniors Club holds meetings at 2 p.m. every Friday in the cafeteria at Our Lady of Peace Church, Amboy Avenue, Fords section of Woodbridge. Membership is open year-round to those ages 60 and older who live in Woodbridge and do not belong to any other township senior club. Applicants must appear at the meeting by 1:30 p.m. The Fords librarian is present on the first Friday of each month. Blood pressure is taken on the third Friday of the month. A trip to Caesars Casino in Atlantic City is planned for every third Wednesday. A picnic at the Annex is planned for Sept. 30. Oktoberfest at Platzl Brauhaus in Pomona, N.Y., is slated for Oct. 11. PoetsWednesday plans readings for Oct. 12 PoetsWednesday, co-directed by Edie Eustice and Deborah La Veglia, is celebrating 27 years of readings this fall. Readings take place on the second Wednesday of every month at the Barron Arts Center, with support from the Woodbridge Township Cultural Arts Commission and contributions from the audience. Poets Lamont Steptoe of Camden and Rick Kearns of Harrisburg, Pa., will be the featured readers on Oct. 12, starting at 8 p.m. Steptoe, a photographer and publisher, is the author of several books of poetry, including “Mad Minute,” “Catfish and Neckbone Jazz” and “Dusty Road.” He also received the American Book Award for 2005 for his new book titled “A Long Movie of Shadows.” Kearns, a freelance writer and musician, has three chapbooks as well as a full-length poetry collection called “Street of Knives.” In addition, he is the percussionist for a flamenco group known as Zambra Flamenca. Pelzman will lead the American Cancer Society’s annual “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” walk in Woodbridge at 9 a.m. Oct. 16. The 5-mile walk begins and ends at Woodbridge Center in the Fortunoff parking lot, with registration starting at 8 a.m. The mayor and the township will sponsor a team of walkers. The week of Oct. 9 is Fire Prevention Week. Volunteers sought to help domestic violence victims The Woodbridge Township Domestic Violence Response Team is seeking new members. Any interested persons who want to make a difference in the lives of domestic violence victims will be asked to fill out an application form. A criminal background check and interview are part of the process. All applicants must possess a valid driver’s license and have their own transportation to police headquarters for assistance calls. American Legion slates day trip to Atlantic City American Legion T. Nulty Post 471, 25 Brown Ave., Iselin section of Woodbridge, is sponsoring a bus trip to the Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City on Oct. 2. Cost is $22, which includes transportation along with a 9 a.m. breakfast (at the post) consisting of bagels, donuts, coffee, tea and juice; $18 in coins will be returned at the casino. Bus departs at 10 a.m. and will return at approximately 8 p.m. For reservations or more information, call the post at (732) 636-9524. Also, 2006 dues are now being collected. Those who have not yet been notified by the American Legion Department of N.J. should remit their dues as soon as possible to avoid a lapse in membership. The money is needed to continue programs for veterans and the community. Iselin AARP slates show trips for November The Iselin AARP Chapter No. 3810, Woodbridge, has planned several trips for members and other interested seniors. Schedule is as follows: • Nov. 10 — A 1:30 p.m. matinee of “The King and I” at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) in Newark. Departure time to be announced. Golf outing will benefit families of firefighters Brothers Helping Brothers, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping families of New Jersey firefighters killed or disabled in the line of duty, will hold a fund-raising golf outing on Oct. 10 at the Concordia Golf Club, Monroe. Tee-off and shotgun start are set for 7:45 a.m. The event will include a continental breakfast, hamburgers and hot dogs on the turn, a buffet lunch and an awards ceremony. The outing will feature a hole-in-one challenge for an automobile, a 50/50 raffle, and prizes for closest to the pin, longest drive and more. Collared shirts are a must. Jeans are not permitted. Donation is $125 per player, $450 for a foursome. Hole sponsorships are available at $200 each. All proceeds will go directly to the families of the fallen heroes. Brothers Helping Brothers was founded after the attack on the World Trade Center, New York City, to raise money for the families of rescue workers killed while responding to the terrorist attacks. The fund has become permanent and has helped the families of seven New Jersey firefighters lost in the line of duty.
