JFK golf team struggling a bit with inconsistency
BY MIKE McDONALD
Staff Writer

The John F Kennedy golf team, coached by Tony Palombo, had a 1-2 week last week, which is somewhat indicative of how the entire season has gone.

After losing its first two matches, the Mustangs rebounded to win its sixth match of the year against Middlesex High School on Friday, giving them a 6-12 mark on the year.

While 6-12 is a far cry from last year’s team, which finished tied for third with two other teams in the Blue Division of the Greater Middlesex Conference, Palombo believes his team can be successful in the role of spoiler the rest of the way, as his younger players continue to mature.

“We could surprise a lot of teams this year if our younger players develop into good golfers and our older golfers play consistently well each match,” said Palombo.

Palombo has been trying to mix and match a good lineup all year, but has had little success. As an example, on Tuesday, Palombo’s lineup included seniors Jason Zeizel, Alvin Chopra, Elliot Solop and Joe Costello. Brendan Bachant also was given the nod.

Then on Thursday Palombo went with a younger lineup with the only seniors being Elliot Solop and Joe Costello. Ryan Sherepany and Billy Hanousek were given starts. But the lineup change produced the same result, and the Mustangs fell to 5-12.

But on Friday, Palombo may have put together the winning formula as Jason Zeizel’s impressive 42 led the way, with Elliot Solop and Joe Costello also shooting in the 40s, and Billy Hanousek shooting a 51.

While the Mustangs are essentially out of the division race, they still have plenty to play for the rest of the way — particularly the younger players who are gaining valuable experience with each match.

“The teaching of my kids is an ongoing process and they will only get better with experience,” said Palombo. “Let’s just hope they are quick learners.”
