Pats put together solid season on hardcourts

Colonia boys tennis coach Rich Kondrik has no complaints about his team’s play thus far.

“We look pretty good so far,” he said.

Playing in a very competitive GMC White Division has proven to be quite the challenge for the Patriots, but they have certainly held their own.

Colonia is 6-6 on the season, but has won its last two matches. Colonia shutout rival Woodbridge, 5-0, on Thursday, as Usana Jawed, Rohan Sheth and Krunal Patel all won their singles matches, while the doubles pairings of Ed Baynes and Jim Clifford, and Jay Shah and Ryan Dreker also won.

Colonia next faced Carteret on Friday and shut them out as well. Single winners were Jawed, Sheth and Shah. Doubles winners were Ryan Ereher and Jimmy Clifford, and Ryan Richstin and Joe Baker.

One of the main reasons for Colonia’s success this year has been the play of Jawed. The junior made the All-White team last year and would make any coach look forward to coaching a team led by him.

“Jawed plays up to his opponent,” Kondrik said. “He always seems to play well and we can count on him to play well each match he is in.”

But the Pats are clearly more than a one-man show this year.

“I feel that our singles lineup is experienced and is a strong one,” the coach said. “Anytime you can have five players return to your team from the year before, you have a good chance of having great success.”
