JFK tennis team among county’s elite squads BY MIKE McDONALD Staff Writer
While the North Brunswick boys tennis team has garnered headlines of late because of their recent success against Red Division opponents, there’s another team in the White Division that has proven it can play with anyone.
The J.F. Kennedy boys team has raced out to a 14-2 start this year, just one game behind the aforementioned Raiders, who lead the division at 12-1 overall and 10-0 in the division.
The Mustangs are clearly the second best team in the White Division, but are also one of the deepest teams in the entire GMC.
“This year’s team is a cohesive unit,” head coach Sharon DiLonardo said. “They are all good friends. They help each other out while also competing against each other for bragging rights.
“We have a collection of good tennis players,” she added “What makes this team interesting and intriguing is the fact that most of the kids who don’t get to play on this team, could be starters for other high schools. The depth of success is mind-boggling.”
Last week was just another strong collection of matches for JFK, as they went 4-0 thanks to contributions from a number of players.
The team began the week by shutting out South Plainfield on Monday, getting singles victories from Shariq Mustafa, Sandeep Satish and Viral Patel. Doubles winners were Neil Shah and Ryan McCann, and Nikhil Jain and Parag Shah.
The team then played on Wednesday and shut out Carteret. Singles winners were Shariq Mustafa, Nikhil Jain and Parag Shah, while doubles winners were Venkata Kintall and Jon Trabitz, and Sucreet Bhalla and Richard Wong.
Kennedy then beat a good Spotswood team on Thursday, 4-1. Singles winners were Mustafa, Satish and Patel, while the doubles pairing of Shah and Bhalla won its match.
Kennedy wrapped up the week with a 4-1 win over Monroe, getting singles wins from Mustafa (his fourth win of the week) and Satish (his third win of the week, and doubles wins from the pairings of Shah and McCann, and Jain and Shah.
While all of the Mustangs will look to make some noise in this week’s GMC Tournament, which gets under way tomorrow at Thomas Edison Park, the JFK team will be looking forward to next Wednesday, when they get another shot at North Brunswick.
This one should decide the White Division title once and for all.
