Barrons golf team having a better year than anticipated
BY MIKE McDONALD
Staff Writer

The Woodbridge High School golf team entered the week in third place in the White Division on the Greater Middlesex Conference.

Despite the fact that head coach Bill O’Brien’s squad lost three of the team’s top five golfers from last year’s team to graduation, the Barrons have held their own thus far, putting together a 12-8 record, and a 7-3 mark in divisional play.

They trail Monroe, who entered the week undefeated in division play at 6-0, and South Plainfield, who was just a game back at 7-1.

Last week was a strong one for the Barrons, who are looking less and less like the rebuilding team O’Brien thought they would be.

The week began with the team beating North Brunswick on Monday, as Bryan Horvath, Nelson Owen III, Yves Javier and Chris Petrick all shot in the 40s. The team then played on the following day and beat Sayreville, as senior Dave Balasic helped lead the team to its second division win in two days. Also contributing in the win was Horvath, Owen and Javier.

With the team riding high, the Barrons had a bit of a letdown on Wednesday, falling to South River, although Javier shot a 39, the best score on the course that day.

The Barrons then finished second among rivals Colonia and John F. Kennedy on Thursday, but ended the week with a win on Friday against Cardinal McCarrick.

Following another busy week this week, the Barrons will be looking forward to Wednesday’s matchup with Monroe, where they will look to give the Falcons their first divisional loss of the year.
