Letters Fund-raiser for former boxer raises $6,000
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who stepped up to help Woodbridge High School graduate, Port Reading native and former professional boxer Ricky “The Rock” Meyers, who was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident in Las Vegas, Nev.
I need to send a special thank you to Mr. Richard Gould, the long-standing Woodbridge fire commissioner, who co-chaired the fund drive with me, along with Mr. John Fleming, the other driving force behind the effort to help Ricky.
I also need to thank the following business owners, who were a tremendous benefit in raising funds: Carmine and Ernie Margiatto of Pop’s Place; Nunzio Italiano of Joe’s Barbershop; Mike Baldasaro of Hollywood Barbers; Sharon McAuliffe of Not Just Bagels; Paul and Robert DeSantis of Center Bar and Pizzeria; Richard Schwarz of Woodbridge Florist; Woodbridge Elks, BPOE No. 2116; and the Woodbridge Sentinel
I want everyone to know that Ricky is extremely grateful and emotionally touched by the outpouring of support the people of Woodbridge Township have shown him and his daughters.
The fund raised over $6,000, which will help Ricky offset his medical bills. Ricky has made tremendous strides and be assured, he is winning the biggest fight of his life. A full recovery is expected!
Again, thank you to each and every individual who helped make this drive a success.

JCC president grateful for Jewish holiday resolution
I would like to thank and commend all those involved in the recent discussion and resolution concerning the removal of the High Holy Days from the Edison public school system’s calendar.
The leaders of our community, the Edison Board of Education and Mayor George Spadoro demonstrated that by working together with the community towards a common goal, obstacles can be overcome.
Edison is a diverse community, composed of people of varied ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds. We find our strength in this diversity through cooperation, tolerance, understanding and a desire to see that done which is best for all.
As president of the Jewish Community Center (JCC) of Middlesex County, I have seen this strength firsthand in our interaction with the mayor and Township Council, through our collaboration with the YMCA to create the Community Campus, which was greatly supported by our mayor and council, and within our community at large.
I would like to extend my personal thanks to Mayor Spadoro for his role in the resolution process. While the mayor could easily have avoided this issue, since the Board of Education is an autonomous body, he instead chose to take a strong, advisory role.
I believe that his guidance and support played a crucial role in the speed with which the issues were brought to a satisfactory conclusion.
As we celebrate the freedom symbolized by Passover I want to thank Mayor Spadoro, the leaders of the Jewish community and the Edison Board of Education for their continued support.
