Rutgers men show some progress in second win
BY MIKE McDONALD
Staff Writer

The Rutgers University basketball team (2-5), coached by Fred Hill, may finally be turning the corner.

Rutgers beat Nebraska (5-1) in exciting fashion by the final score of 75-73 this past Saturday.

"We're getting better, we're learning, we're growing. We said it's going to be a process. I just think that these kids have worked so hard that they deserved and earned what they got today," said Hill.

The hero of the game was J.R. Inman who Hill expects a lot from, although he is only a sophomore.

"J.R. can develop into one of the toughest mismatches in Big East. He is extremely talented young man. He is 6-9 and can play inside, outside and make threes," said Hill.

Inman scored the winning basket after Marquis Webb took a three-pointer but missed with just under 30 seconds remaining in the game. Inman grabbed the offensive rebound and converted the follow to give the Rutgers the 74-73 lead.

Despite missing the shot, Webb showed the type of moxy in taking the big shot that Hill has come to expect from him.

"Marquis is our leader. He is a young many who is very special. He does it vocally. He does it by example. He is a true leader," Hill said.

Webb made one of a one-and-one situation with less than a second remaining to give Rutgers the two-point edge.

Sophomore forward Jaron Griffin led Rutgers offensively with a career-high 16 points, including four out of five shots from behind the three-point arc. Senior forward Frank Russell came off the bench to score 11 points and grab 10 rebounds.

Hill has talked about this year's team needing to be team oriented, not a one-man show like last year's team.

"Quincy [Douby] was able to create scoring opportunities for himself," Hill said. "We really don't have a player like that. What we do have is a very talented team. We will try to run our sets and mix in some quick hitters. We need to recognize where scoring opportunities come from. We are going to try to be terrific defensive team and score baskets through good transitional play."

Hill knows that for his seniors there is a sense of urgency to try to put together a solid year.

"There is a sense of urgency for our seniors," the coach said. "We try to let our guys find their spots. We try to find opportunities for them to score. We try to put our players in places for them to succeed."

RU will be back in action later today when they host New Hampshire at 7:30 p.m. at the Louis Brown Athletic Center.
