Police department promotes six officers BY KATHY CHANG Staff Writer
WOODBRIDGE - Six veteran police officers were promoted to the rank of sergeant on Nov. 28.
"It was a big-time struggle for them, but they made it," said Police Chief William Trenery. "I look forward to working with these men in their new positions. These police officers have served in many critical areas throughout the department. Their depth of training and range of experience will serve township residents as they move to supervisory positions. This is a good thing for the department."
Patrolman Ronald C. Leidner, a 19-year veteran, Patrolman William Hessemer, a 21-year veteran, Patrolman Daniel Perovic, a 13-year veteran, Patrolman Kalman Hegedus, a 21-year veteran, Patrolman Eric Nelson, a 13-year veteran, and Patrolman Joseph Velez, a 24-year veteran, were sworn in as sergeants at a ceremony held at town hall.
"I am enormously proud of these police officers," said Mayor John E. McCormac, "and as importantly proud of the job performed by the entire Woodbridge Township Police Department and of the high standards of public service exhibited by each and every member of our department."
Leidner, 50, will be assigned duties as a squad and road supervisor in the department's Radio Patrol Division.
Hessemer, 45, has served in the Radio Patrol Division and as a detective in the Criminal Investigation Division. He will also be assigned duties as a squad and road supervisor in the Radio Patrol Division.
Perovic, 41, has served on the Traffic Enforcement Unit and on the Bike Squad. He will be assigned duties as a squad and road supervisor in the department's Radio Patrol Division.
Hegedus, 50, has served in the department's Radio Patrol Division and as a detective in the Criminal Investigation Division. He will be assigned duties as a squad and road supervisor in the Radio Patrol Division.
Nelson, 37, has served as a patrolman in the Radio Patrol Division and is currently assigned to the Traffic Enforcement Unit. He will be assigned duties as a supervisor in the Traffic Enforcement Unit.
Velez, 46, has served as a patrolman in the Radio Patrol Division and is currently assigned as a detective in the Criminal Investigation Division. He will continue his assignment in the Criminal Investigation Division as a detective sergeant.
